Overuse of Performance Enhancing Drugs Increases Risk of Infertility in Men

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates-Sunday 24 November 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

Infertility is a chronic health problem that affects one in every six couples or approximately 10% couples trying to conceive. Infertile individuals typically are unable to have their own child, despite trying for a year or in some cases more. The recent spread of performance-enhancing drugs (PED) among young people, to increase their muscle mass and strength, has further complicated the issue. These drugs are detrimental to the health of users and may cause infertility.

Dr. Zakwan Khrait, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Specialist at Eve Fertility Center, said that the intake of PED may change the concentration of various hormone secretions, influence the sperm production process and cause its users to become infertile. Although seldom recommended, he advises using PED only with a valid prescription.

Although medical studies confirmed that the use of sexual stimulants has no effect on the efficiency of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI), Dr. Khrait emphasized the need to quit the usage of these medicines much ahead of the IVF-ICSI. He underlined the importance of using such medicines under medical supervision to avoid long term complications.

In support of Movember, the global campaign to raise awareness about male health issues, Eve Fertility Center offers free semen analysis and consultation in addition to discounts on IVF-ICSI packages.

Eve Fertility Center in Sharjah, opened as part of the efforts made by NMC Health to provide the best in healthcare services to residents of the Northern Emirates, particularly Sharjah.
